Most autism research traditionally centers on early intervention and childhood development—but the needs of autistic individuals don’t stop at adolescence. That’s why there’s growing attention in the clinical community toward understanding how autism evolves through adulthood and aging. Recently, standout clinical psychology graduate Claire Klein has helped shine a national spotlight on this critical topic through her research at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Klein’s dedication to the autistic community began with a summer camp role and has grown into a focused mission to study autism across the lifespan. Her work emphasizes the importance of addressing the needs of autistic adults—an area that remains vastly underserved in both research and practice.
The UNC TEACCH Program’s Role in Lifespan Care
During her time at UNC, Klein trained under the TEACCH Autism Program, one of the most respected autism service and research centers in North Carolina. TEACCH is unique in its commitment to serving individuals from early childhood through older adulthood. This comprehensive approach inspired Klein to direct her dissertation toward understanding how development continues into midlife and beyond for autistic individuals.
Her research underscores a crucial reality: while early support is vital, long-term care strategies, including social, behavioral, and vocational support, are just as essential as individuals grow older.
