New Jersey is rolling out an important new option for residents on the autism spectrum or with communication disorders—a special designation on their driver’s licenses and ID cards. This move aims to improve interactions with law enforcement by making diagnoses easily identifiable and ensuring respectful, informed responses.

Starting soon, qualifying New Jersey residents can apply to have the number 5 listed in the “Restrictions” section of their license or ID. Along with this, they will receive a Motor Vehicle Commission “pink card” that details their diagnosis and must be carried whenever the license or ID is presented.

Why This Matters for the Autism Community

For many on the spectrum, encounters with police or other officials can be stressful or misunderstood. Autism and communication disorders can affect behavior and communication in ways that are often misread by law enforcement.

With this new designation:

  • Officers will know to approach and communicate appropriately
  • Misinterpretations of behavior can be avoided
  • Safety and dignity of individuals with autism are prioritized

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin emphasized the importance of respectful treatment, while advocates highlight real-life cases where misunderstandings created difficult situations. This initiative addresses a crucial gap in awareness and accommodation.

How to Get the Designation

To qualify for the autism or communication disorder notation on your NJ license or ID, you’ll need:

  • Six points of identification
  • A formal statement from yourself or your guardian confirming the diagnosis

This new program is launching next week, giving families and individuals a valuable tool to navigate everyday life more safely and confidently.
